Disability Access

This Access Statement has been prepared to help those with disabilities to assess whether Tradewind will be accessible to them

The Bungalow
Tradewind is a self-catering, single storey bungalow on a relatively level site, there is a slope on the first part of the driveway on leaving the road. The bungalow has a wide sweeping driveway and cars can be taken up to the front door. There is sufficient space on the driveway for 3 cars. Access to the bungalow is over one threshold at the porch door and up one step through the internal front door. The minimum door width is 70cm this includes access into the front door and the back garden, however there is one external door between the front garden and a walkway to the back door which is 67cm wide. There is an audio smoke alarm and 2 audio carbon monoxide alarms. The bungalow is level within and has a separate walk in shower (small threshold/step) and separate bath. No special facilities are provided. There are no handrails in the bungalow. Pets are not accepted with the exception of guide dogs. Pillows and duvets are hollow fibre filled and have anti-allergy covers. There is a step from the lounge to the conservatory and a step from the conservatory to the garden. The back door from the utility room leads into a covered walkway with access into the back garden. There are three steps down from the utility room, a threshold from the walkway to the garden and into the front garden/driveway.

The rear garden is laid to lawn, with a gravel path around the edge. The front driveway is brick pavers with a small step up to the front porch from the drive and slope down to the road. Easton Lane does not have a footpath and is a single track road. There is a public footpath F37 a short walk from the front entrance to Tradewind, turn left into Easton Lane from the driveway and the gateway, (a kissing gate) to the footpath is visible.

The owners are not on site and do not have any specific training in dealing with people with disabilities.

Getting here

Travel by public transport

  • You can get to Tradewind, Easton Lane, Freshwater by bus and boat or ferry.
  • The nearest bus stop is in Victoria Road, 0.2miles / 0.3 km from Tradewind. Exit the driveway and turn right up the hill, at the end of Easton Lane, turn right into Victoria Road and the bus stop just before the next bend.
  • The nearest port is Yarmouth Ferry Terminal (Wightlink). The port is 2.5 miles / 4.0 km from Tradewind, Easton Lane, Freshwater.
  • The ferry crossing from Lymington to Yarmouth is run by WIghtlink

Travel by taxi

  • You can get a taxi with Micks Taxis by calling 01983 752936.
  • You can get a taxi with Alpha Taxis by calling 01983 280280. The taxi company has a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

Parking

  • We have a car park. The parking next to the main entrance to the bungalow. Parking is free.
  • From the parking to the main entrance, there are 4 steps. There is no ramp and no lift.
  • Tradewind has a driveway which has access to the front door, there is a small step up from the driveway to the entrance door and then a threshold to step into the porch. Once in the porch there is a step up to the front door and a threshold to step over to get inside the property.

  • From the street to the main entrance, there are 4 steps. There is no ramp and no lift.
  • The path from the road is sloped, but a car can be driven close to the front door on level ground.

Main entrance

  • The door is 720mm wide.
  • The main entrance has 4 steps and two doors (porch and inside front door).
  • The main doors are side hung and manual.

Visual Impairment – General Information

  • Some parts of the venue have low lighting.

Bedrooms

  • All bedrooms have windows.
  • Bedrooms have ceiling lights, bedside lamps and natural daylight.
  • Lights are LED. TV (bedroom 1) has subtitles.
  • All bedrooms are non-smoking.
  • We have non-allergic bedding.
  • All bedrooms have fitted carpets.
  • From the main entrance to this area, there is level access.

Utility Room

  • From the main entrance to the laundry/utility room, there is level access. The route is 715mm wide, or more. The door is 715mm wide.
  • The Utility Room has a tiled floor.
  • We have an iron and ironing board. You can use the ironing board sitting down.
  • The back door to the property is accessed through the utility room, there are 4 steps down into the back porch. Threshold bars are located at the exit doors from the porch into the front and rear gardens.

Kitchen

  • From the main entrance to the kitchen, there is level access.
  • The route is 760mm wide, or more.
  • The door is 760mm wide.
  • From the main entrance to the dining room, there is 1 step. There is no lift and no ramp.
  • Tradewind has a separate dining area in the conservatory, which has one step to access and also has a dining table in the kitchen.
  • The TV has subtitles.

Lounge

  • From the main entrance to the lounge, there is level access. The route is 760mm wide, or more. The door is 760mm wide.
  • Floors in lounge and hall are laminate floors.
  • There is dimmable lighting in the lounge.
  • TV has subtitles.

Dining room / conservatory

  • From the main entrance to this area, there is 1 step. There is no lift and no ramp. The conservatory is accessed via the lounge and there is one step from the lounge into the conservatory
  • The access door opening is 930mm with a sliding door.
  • Floor in the conservatory is a laminate floor.
  • TV has subtitles.
  • There is also a dining table in the kitchen

Bathroom

  • The bathroom has a walk-in shower cubicle which has one step (over the shower tray to access)
  • There is also a bath with a surrounding ledge which you can sit on to access the bath.
    The door into the bathroom has an opening of 710mm
  • Floor in the bathroom is Lino.
  • The direction of transfer onto the toilet is to the left.
  • There is a heated towel rail.

Separate Toilet

  • The separate toilet is accessed via the Utility Room, it has a toilet and sink, with heated towel rail.
  • The floor is tiled
  • This toilet does not have side access.

Getting around outside

Rear Garden

  • From the main entrance to the gardens, there are 6 steps. There is no lift and no ramp.
  • The rear garden which can be accessed via the patio doors in the dining room / conservatory or via the utility room door. Both routes have steps.

Summer House

  • From the main entrance to the area, there are 7 steps.
  • The summer house is in the rear garden which can be accessed via the patio doors in the dining room / conservatory or via the utility room door. Both routes have steps.

Front Garden

  • From the main entrance to the area, there are 2 steps.
  • From the front door of the bungalow there is a step down, a door threshold and a step down onto the driveway. There is also a small step up from the driveway to the gravelled areas that form the front garden

Customer care support

Accessibility equipment

  • Assistance dogs would be encouraged to use the neighboring footpath, which can be accessed by leaving the bungalow via the front door, walking to the road, turning left and then taking the next left onto the public foot path. As this is a public footpath on private land, any dog waste would need to be removed and can be disposed of in the outside waste bins at Tradewind.
  • We have an area to charge mobility scooters and battery powered wheelchairs, front porch or back porch described below.
    • There is a power point in the front porch but this does have restricted access, a door threshold and the width through this doorway is 720mm.
    • Similarly the back porch has a power point but again there is restricted access, width is 670mm and a small threshold bar is present (2cm high)

Emergency evacuation procedures

  • Fire procedures are located on the notice board in the hallway next to the front door.

Customer care support

  • Some staff have disability awareness training.
  • The owners are available by telephone in an emergency only out of hours. Contact is preferred between 8am and 8pm, but emergency calls 24/7 will be responded to.
